Most countries in the world spend a significant proportion of their energy on lighting. In fact, in the US alone, lighting is thought to consume about 17% of total energy. However, it is not just energy that is wasted. The environment is affected too. This causes a dual problem that needs to be addressed immediately to avoid terrible consequences for future generations. While we don’t have a silver bullet to fix everything yet, we do have access to LED lighting technology that could help reduce the tremendous amount of energy wasted on lighting.
One of the most important areas of lighting is street lighting. This type of lighting needs to be powerful, reliable and effective because constant lighting is necessary for the safety of motorists and pedestrians. LED lights meet all these requirements and outperform existing lighting solutions. Not only is LED lighting more energy efficient – some tests put it at 90% – but the latest generation of the bulbs last for an amazing 50,000+ hours. This in turn hugely reduces the cost of maintenance. The lower energy and maintenance bills are further complemented by the fact that LED bulbs are generally more environmentally friendly than anything else on the market today.
